The legacy of 1609
Drinking spiced hot wine is something we northerners have been doing since 1609. It is said that during his lifetime, Gustav Vasa liked to spice his wine with cinnamon and cloves. Who are we to argue?
A few centuries later, in the 19th century, British soldiers invented tonic because they were suffering from fever and malaria. As protection against malaria, they drank a drink made from quinine, extracted from cinchona bark. Sugar and spices were added for flavour, thus creating a classic.
Since we love both mulled wine and tonic / hot and cold / we combined the two and loved the result. You will too.
